1315076 Boring earth &c ENTREPRISE DE RECHERCHES ET D'ACTIVITES PETROLIERES (ELF) 19 April 1971 [10 March 1970] 23529/71 Heading E1F Apparatus for taking cores from the sea-bed comprises a tube 4, a hollow member 1, 2 having water passages 16, valves 21 closing the passages during withdrawal of the core from the sea-bed, and a tube 5 for the core. With the valves open the apparatus is lowered to the sea-bed and driven into the bed by blows from a device (not shown) acting on an anvil 19. During withdrawal of the core from the bed, screws 18 shear and the tube 4 remains to line the hole. The movement of the member 1, 2 relative to the tube 4 frees the valves which close the passages to prevent flow of water washing the core from the tube 5. In a modification the pull on the cables 31 supporting the apparatus frees the valves.
