1393929 Di-4-chlorophenyl sulphone IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Jan 1974 [16 Oct 1972] 47547/72 Heading C2C Di-4-chlorophenylsulphone is prepared by (a) maintaining a reaction mixture containing 4-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid and chlorobenzene at a temperature of 220-260‹ C. and a superatmospheric pressure between 30 and 1100 kN./m.SP2/SP; (b) removing water as vapour continuously as it is formed; and (c) condensing the water vapour and accompanying chlorobenzene vapour, separating them and returning the chlorobenzene to the reaction mixture. The 4-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid may be formed in situ from chlorobenzene and a sulphonating agent, e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid.
