The monochloroacetyl chloride preferably contains up to 10% by weight of dichloroacetyl chloride. Water, an alkanol or alkanediol of up to 4C atoms are preferably added to the mixture in 0À5-10% by weight based on combined weight of the acid chlorides. At least a stoichiometric amount of water, alcohol or carboxylic acid is used based on the amount of dichloroacetyl chloride present. The distillation is preferably performed at 50- 500 mm. Hg pressure with a bottoms temperature of less than 130‹ C.
