Copolymers comprising vinyl chloride and a maleic acid imide of the formula FORM:1105798/C3/1 where R is an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic group which contains a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom and may be substituted by an aromatic group, and R1 and R11 are hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, cyano or an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, are obtainable by polymerization in bulk, in emulsion or in suspension in the presence of a free-radical forming catalyst. In the Examples, copolymers are obtained using N-(t-butyl)-, N-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-, N-cyclohexyl)-, N-bicyclo-[2,2,1] heptyl-(2)-maleic acid imides and 11-maleinimido - 9,10 - ethano - 9,10- dihydroanthracene as comoners, and using lauroyl peroxide or tri(n-butyl)boran/H2O2 as catalysts. and also employing methyl cellulose, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, disodium phosphate, an alkyl sulphonate containing 12 carbon atoms and cyclohexene in the polymerization mixtures.
