1376587 C 8-16 chlorohydrocarbons NEVILLE CHEMICAL CO 30 May 1973 [29 June 1972] 25689/73 Heading C2C C 8-16 chlorinated hydrocarbons are produced by chlorinating a paraffin hydrocarbon mixture having an average 8-16 C atoms per molecule in the presence of 2 to 20% by weight, based on the weight of said paraffin hydrocarbon mixture, of CCl 4 , CHCl 3 , ClCH 2 CH 2 Cl, CH 3 CCl 3 , ClCH 2 CHCl 2 or CCl 3 CCl 3 , said paraffin being present in the liquid state in contact during at least a portion of the reaction with paraffin hydrocarbon vapour and gaseous chlorine and said additive being at least partially volatilized and present in the gaseous mixture in contact with the liquid hydrocarbon. The reaction is preferably conducted at 80‹ to 120‹C. with a 5 to 10% concentration of additive. The preferred additive is CCl 4 .
