The specification describes a method for producing light guiding layers in transparent crystals, such as LiNbO3 and LiTaO3, by selectively outdiffusing the Li2O component, by heating above 1,000 DEG C in a nonreactive environment thereby effecting a change in the refractive index of the surface portion of the crystal. Effective light guiding layers in acoustooptic and electrooptic devices based on these crystals can be produced by this technique.
