A cupola has a water-cooled wall in the hearth zone and an air-cooled wall in the melting zone. The wall in the latter zone is made of a heat resisting or highly stressed heat resisting matl. Compared with the inner dia. of the shaft, measured across the exists of the tuyeres, the inner shaft dia. in the melting zone is 1 1/2 to 2 times larger.
