Metal ions (I) in soln. are enriched and/or sepd. using cpds. (II) which can bind the dissolved (I) by (a) adding macromolecular (II) contg. (I)-binding gps. which are sol. in the (I) soln. and (b) sepg. the resultant dissolved high m.w. metal cpd. (III) from the low m.w. constituents of the soln. The method is suitable for non-specific sepn. of alkali(ne earth) and heavy metal ions or, using suitable (II) for selective concn. or sepn. of Au,Ag, platinum metal and Hg ions, even from very dilute solns. The process operates in homogeneous phase, making it simpler than counter-current exten. with a water-immiscible soln. and enrichment factors of 1:1 000 000 can be attained without difficulty. (III) has m.w. is not 3000. (II) is a polymer with gps. forming ionic or saline cpds. or derived from complex- or chelate- forming reagents. Sepn. is by dialysis, ultrafiltration or gel chromatography.
