Cu is extracted from spent catalysts contg. Cu and/or oxides of Cu, Zn, Al and Cr which have been used for CO conversion, or methanol synthesis, by adjusting the mole ratio of ZnO/Al2O3 in the mixt. to 1:0.9 to 1:1.2 by addn. of ZnO and/or Al2O3, and heating the mixt. to at least 800 degrees C pref. 900-1100 degrees C for 1 hr before separating Cu from the other metals by dissolving in dilute nitric acid or an aq. soln. of an ammonium salt.
