Radiation-induced graft polymsn. of vinyl monomers (I) on a polymer backbone (II) in a soln. contg. (I) and a solvent system (III) which does not inhibit graft polymsn. comprises the use of is not 5 wt.% cpd. (IV) of formula NHR (CH2)n-OH (in which R is H or Me; n = 2-6) in (III). Pref. (I) is 2- and/or 4-vinyl- and/or 2-methyl-5-vinyl-pyridine, (II) esp. cellulosic material or wool, polyethylene or polystyrene and (III) mainly (5-100% (IV) esp. NH2CH2CH2OH, pref. in conjunction with is not 10 wt.% MeOH and/or EtOH. The total (gamma) radiation dose is 0.1-10 (0.25-5) MR and the dose rate 0.005-1.0 (0.1)MR/h. Improved yields are obtd.
