Rail thermit welding moulds prepn - avoiding need to modify the mould before applying it to the rail to be welded

The mould is supported by a frame with a rim arranged to surround the rail at a given distance, and is prepd. by arranging a profiled element, esp. a short rail length, of the same cross section as the rail to be welded on the mould surface at the point that the rail itself will occupy; ramming the space between the rim and the profile with a refractory paste, and sliding the profile over the paste while leaving it in contact with the mould surface. Pref. a stringer of low combustibility e.g. of asbestos or wool is arranged over the paste before applying the mould to the rail to be welded.
