The apparatus may be used for reduction of iron ore using hydrogen as the fluidising gas and heating the fluidised bed 103 or for fluorination of uranium dioxide using fluorine as fluidising gas and cooling the fluidised bed 103. Alternatively, in the embodiment of Fig. 8, not shown; a catalyst such as nickel may be regenerated as the particles of the fluidised bed, the particles either remaining in the container 103 or being renewed.
