1364483 Fluidised beds, heating and cooling granular material SOC ANON HEURTEY 11 June 1971 [12 June 1970] 27514/71 Headings B1F and B1X [Also in Divisions Cl C7 F4 and H5] Apparatus for effecting a chemical reaction between a gas and granular material or for regenerating a catalyst comprises a container 103 for a fluidised bed, an open ended cylinder 104 within the container 103 through which cylinder the granular material is passed downwardly, wherein either the particles of the fluidised bed are heated or cooled in a further fluidised bed 106, as shown, or the granular material is recirculated through the container 103 (Fig. 8), via an elevator (111) and a heater (101, 110). The apparatus may be used for reduction of iron ore using hydrogen as the fluidising gas and heating the fluidised bed 103 or for fluorination of uranium dioxide using fluorine as fluidising gas and cooling the fluidised bed 103. Alternatively, in the embodiment of Fig. 8, not shown; a catalyst such as nickel may be regenerated as the particles of the fluidised bed, the particles either remaining in the container 103 or being renewed.
