1275686 Coated sheet materials NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 8 June 1970 [24 June 1969] 27587/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 B6 D2 and G2] A film, useful in displaying information, comprises two or more polymers in admixture, at least one of which undergoes phase separation with respect to the others on the application of a phase separation stimulus and which is either a transparent (T), homogeneous solid solution or a heterogeneous, opaque (O) solid having microscopic domains of separated polymeric material. Change from one condition to the other may be effected by application of a solvent, heat or pressure in selected areas. The change from O to T is reversible; the change from T to O may be reversible. The film may be made by casting a solution of the polymers, the solvent depending on the polymer miscibility therewith and the desired state (T or O) of the cast film. In examples the following polymers and solvents are used; chlorinated rubber-polyvinylmethyl ether in methylisobutylketone (T) or CHCl 3 , methylene chloride or trichloroethylene (O); chlorinated rubber-polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate (*) in toluene or CCl 4 (T) or CHCl 3 , methylene chloride or trichloroethylene (O); chlorinated rubber-polymethylmethacrylate in toluene (T) or methylene chloride or trichloroethylene (O); and polyvinylmethylether-polystyrene or chlorinated rubber-polymethylmethacrylate or chlorinated polypropylene-polyethylene-covinylacetate which are cast onto an AL substrate from toluene (T) or CHCl 3 (O). In the case marked (*) the film may be cast onto a polyethyleneterephthalate substrate and also the O condition may be caused by heating, this change possibly being reversible. Polystyrene, ethyl cellulose or chlorinated rubber combined with polyvinylmethyl ether are combinations which are irreversibly rendered O on heating. This effect may be used to erase writing on a film, which may then be reused by writing thereon with a T-type solvent.
