Construction for bridging gaps between ends of rails - which allows relative longitudinal movement of the rails

A square sectioned slot is machined in the ends of the rails in which a bridging block is mounted. This block is flush with the top of the rail and is welded in the end of one rail and free to slide in the end of the other rail. The weakened ends of the rails are re-inforced with wedging plates which are mounted at either side of the rail section between the top and the foot of the rail. The wedging plates are bolted together.
