The printed characters are formed by feeding m groups of n bits controlling the shift bars whose total thickness corresponds to the height of the printed line. The bars contact the transversal bridge fastened to carriage which moves along guides and is fitted with a stud to engage pawls. The pawls can engage saw-tooth racks exhibiting a different pitch for controlling the entrained carriage displacement. The pressure sensitive paper is inserted between a set of bars and the bridge ad the design dispenses with the ink ribbon.
