This layer 11 is preferably woven, Fig. 2, from a tape of the material to give uniform strength properties. As shown in Fig. 3 a woven polypropylene layer 11 is laminated with a cotton layer 10 by melting polypropylene into the nip between heated calender rollers 16 which feed the sheets 10 and 11 forward. The laminate then passes around chilled rollers 18. The process can be repeated to bond a second layer 20 of cotton on the other side. Further layers 21 of e.g. cotton, polyvinyl chloride or acrylonitrile are bonded in place by e.g. rubber cement. The polymer layer is suitably polyester, polyamide or 'acrylic material.
