The character recognition system is for written symbols using electro-optical scanning of the degree of blackness of the symbol along a line for retaining in an intermediate memory matrix before passing to the electronic logic recognition circuits. The stored values are fed out with a slight time delay in full synchronism with the line scanning so that the degree of blackening distribution is recorded as a significant continuous line not interrupted by local reductions in the degree of blackness. The scanning lightspot is adapted to the width of the lines of the writing being scanned and at each point of the intermediate storage matrix, provided with a memory cell of sufficient bit capacity, a single value representing the blackness of the line is retained.
