1426269 Laminates SUMITOMO BAKELITE CO Ltd 15 May 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 23109/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A resin composition comprises (a) 10 to 90% by weight, based on the total weight of components (a) and (b), of a prepolymer of diallyl orthophthalate and/or diallyl isophthalate, (b) 90 to 10% by weight, in total, based on the total weight of components (a) and (b), of (i) a non- crystalline unsaturated polyester, and (ii) a benzoguanamine resin, the weight ratio of (ii) : (i) being up to 0À85 and the amount of (ii) being at least 2% by weight of the total weight of components (a) and (b). An impregnating solution comprises such a composition, a crosslinking monomer, and, optionally a colourant and/or a releasing agent, dissolved in a volatile organic solvent. Paper, cloth or unwoven fabric may be impregnated with such a solution also containing a polymerization initiator and the solvent subsequently allowed to evaporate to dryness. A decorative plate or sheet may be produced by hot-pressing such an impregnated sheet to a base-plate or sheet or hot-pressing two or more impregnated sheets to one another. In the examples decorative paper, overlay paper, printed paper, overlay non-woven cloth, printed decorative paper and kraft paper are impregnated with solutions of unsaturated polyesters prepared from phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, propylene glycol, isophthalic acid, fumaric acid and diethylene glycol, benzoguanamine/formaldehyde resin, diallyl phthalate prepolymer, benzoyl peroxide, diallyl phthalate monomer, lauric acid and tertiary butyl perbenzoate in acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. The impregnated papers and cloth are laminated to each other or to plywood, hardboard or partiele board by hot-pressing.
