Heat pump system for heating buildings and industrial appts. uses two cyclic processes. The first cycle is used in a hot air engine working on the Carnot cycle. The mechanical energy produced is used in the second cycle, running in the reversed direction and possibly also in a Carnot cycle, to bring heat taken from a heat reservoir at lower temperature up to a higher temperature level. Preferably both cycles occur in a common, pressure-tight vessel, and the driven side is separated from the driving side by a piston, a diaphragm, or a gas-permeable, sieve-like heat-impermeable unit similar to the conventional regenerator of a Stirling engine. Electrical energy, is not required.
