The design of a warp knitting machine, where the weft is carried by a projectile in a pneumatic airstream, has a profiled guide tube for the projectile carried in the suction airstream, with a starter tube which is activated to give the initial acceleration. The system allows the weft carrier to be activated marginally before the shed is in the correct posn. so that its speed is at the required level on entering the warp knitter giving an accurate insertion and increasing the weft insertion rate with reduced weft wastage.
