Phosphonates prepd. by reaction of substd. phosphorohalide with substd. phenol and acid binder, are of formula (where R = methyl or ethyl; R1 = n or isopropyl, n - or isobutyl or sec. butyl; R2 and R3 = H. Cl,Br, methyl, meth ylthio or carb (2-3C). (I) are specif. 3-n-propyl-n-O-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethyl-Thiophosphonate and S-n-propyl-O-(2-carbomethoxyphenyl)-methyl-thiophosphonate. (I) have broad-spectrum biocidal activity and may be used against many vegetable and animal pests in all stages of development, esp. against cotton pests such as Spodoptera littleralis and Heliothis virescens.
