The inserts are wedge-sectioned in order that they are able to take up the higher loads at the edges of the strips. The inserts may be formed of softwood, resilient foam plastics or flat grain balsa wood of suitable density. Where possible, the resilient material can vary in density towards the edges to allow for the varying load. An alternative embodiment is also described in which the insulation is in the form of island units with inserts therein (Fig. 2, not shown).
