1471195 Purifying water EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 5 July 1974 [25 July 1973 (2)] 29971/74 Heading C1C A salt of a weak acid and a weak base is removed from water in which it is in equilibrium with said acid and base by simultaneous removal of the acid and base by separate mechanisms which are vapour stripping, distillation, solvent extraction, adsorption on or reaction with a solid adsorbent or permeation into a liquid membrane. In Examples ammonium sulphide is removed from water by (a) contact with dispersed ion-exchange feeds or charcoal combined with countercurrent vapour stripping; (b) contact with a slurry of ion-exchange resin in a solvent and (c) contact with an emulsion, the exterior phase of which is immiscible with water but permeable by the acid or base which reacts with the interior phase, combined with vapour stripping.
