Track equipment in austenitic steel with 12-14% Mn content is prevented from becoming brittle at the point where it is welded to a rail by welding a short length of rail having a low C content and an Ni content of 15-25% to the austenitic steel and carrying out hyper-tempering on the two, the welding metal having been chosen so as not to be affected by this. The intermediate piece is then welded to the end of the rail by alumino-thermic welding which does not make the intermediate piece brittle or heat the austenitic steel excessively.
