Carbide based ceramics with controlled porosity and passive in contact with corrosive molten metals such as aluminium and steel are made by mixing fine powders of appropriate granulometry one of which is a carbide of a gp. IV, V or VI element, mixng 0.1-6.0% of an alkali fluoride with the mixt., adding an organic gel, e.g. gum arabic, packing the mixt. into a mould under vibration and sintering for =1 hr. at 900-1600 degrees C (1350 degrees C) in force air or in a controlled atmosphere. They have improved shock and thermal shock resistance and resistance to chemical attack by molten metals.
