1467928 Balloon catheter KENDALL CO 5 Sept 1975 [11 Sept 1974] 36714/75 Heading A5R A catheter comprises a shaft 22 having a drainage eye 24 at its distal end and containing a drainage lumen 28 for draining urine from the bladder of a patient, a flexible tube 44 surrounding the shaft, except the'proximal 30 and distal 26 ends thereof and forming a balloon around the shaft which is of sufficient length for its proximal end portion 48 to be external to the body of a patient when its distal end portion 46 is located in the bladder. and an inflation lumen 34 for admitting fluid to the space 42 between the balloon and the shaft to inflate the balloon, the distal end portion of the balloon being inflatable by a lower internal pressure than the proximal end portion. The distal end 26 of the shaft is inserted into the patient's urethra and when it is assumed that it, together with the distal end portion of the balloon has reached the bladder then fluid is injected through a valve 36 into lumen 34 and into the distal end portion 46 of the balloon to inflate it. If the distal end portion 46 has not reached the bladder then the walls of the urethra prevent inflation of the distal end portion 46 and cause the fluid to inflate the proximal end portion 48 externally of the patient. This prevents damage to the urethra. It is ensured that, when the balloon is correctly inserted into the bladder, the distal end portion 46 will have a tendency to inflate greater than that of the proximal end portion 48 by (a) making the transverse radius of the portion 46 greater, (b) making the wall thickness of portion 46 less than that of portion 48, or (c) making the proximal end portion 48 of several layers of material thus again making its thickness greater. The inflation lumen may communicate with the space 42 at the distal end portion 46, as shown, or at the proximal end portion 48 in which case grooves formed in the outer surface of the shaft 22 ensure fluid communication along the length of the balloon when inserted in the urethra.
