The charge is pre-heated in a first zone of the shaft down which it passes at constant velocity, followed by progressive heating to reduction temperature in a second zone in which the rate of descent progressively decreases. The temperature is maintained constant in the lower part of the second zone and in a third zone. The discharge operation is such that the temporary speed of descent is maintained constant across any horizontal cross-section of the shaft.
