Molten steel is subject to bombardment by gamma rays during its passage down a runner from one ladle to a collecting ladle underneath. The valence electrons are removed from the Fe nucleus to fill the 4p shell. Any included gases are expelled by the high-energy rays and carried away in a stream of compressed air. The metal crystallises with a hexagonal structure that does not revert to alpha-iron on solidification and cooling, and is resistant to all aggressive media.
