Destruction of waste carbonaceous substances - by subjecting to irradiation and action of water and excess oxygen

Carbonaceous substances, esp. waste matl. of all types e.g. polluted potable water or water contg. silver or gold cyanides, are destroyed by (a) irradiating with light having a wavelength of 20-600 m mu, and (b) simultaneously subjecting to the action of water and excess oxygen. The mixt. to be treated contains catalytic amts. of a chlorine cpd. pref. hydrogen chloride, this cpd. being subsequently eliminated.
