The waste gas containing SO2 is conducted into a wet precipitator comprising a vortex chamber and is washed with Ca(OH)2 soln; after recovering the residual heat the gas is expelled by a blower to the atmosphere. In the preferred appts., in addition to the washing unit there in an air pre-heater utilising the waste heat from the flue gases.
