In an exhaust gas reactor esp. for i.c. engines; having a tubular housing for the reception of at least one pref. monolithic reactor insert through which the gases flow longitudinally and having a connecting pipe leading to the smaller cross section exhaust gas feed pipe., the reactor insert is longer in the axial zone than at the edge zones, so that in the region of greater flow energy a greater flw resistance is attained as a result of the corresp. increase of the length of insert flow path in the centre of the flow, and therefore a more uniform flow over the whole cross section of the reactor is obtainable. The arrangement gives a more efficient and uniform detoxification of the exhaust gases as well as a longer life of the reactor insert, since the centre zone is not burnt out prematurely.
