The design provides high mechanical efficiency of transmission especially for fluctuating load factors. It is used on involute wheel faces on steel gears, for example in vehicle and machine tool gear boxes. The advantage claimed is that the maximum loading between the teeth faces on gear change is reduced, thereby decreasing stress corrosion (pitting). Oscillations in the system are reduced and hence the noise generated. The principal feature of the gear tooth is that there is a slot with near parallel sides in the cross sectional surface. The cut away section reduces the cross sectional area by up to one half. The slot only slightly reduces the stiffness of the tooth. The slot is cut symmetrically in the tooth centre.
