Mixture-compression, spark-ignition combustion engine driven by atomised liquid fuel comprises in the carburettor (15) a device (16) for applying an electrostatic charge of differing polarity to the droplets. In the region of the sparkling plug (7) in each combustion chamber is an electrically insulated electrode (13) which is maintained constantly at a negative potential relative to the charge of the droplets. Near a Venturi jet is a flow-permeable electrode (16) which is insulated from the housing and capable of connection to a high potential of which the polarity is opposite to that of the electrostatic charge of the droplets which are thus attracted to the other electrode, enriching the mixture in the region of the spark.
