A thermostatically operated radiator valve has a by-pass (9) which is controlled by a piston (50) attached to the valve spindle (55). A tapered valve plunger (4) on spindle (55) regulates the medium flow to the radiator from inlet port (11) to outlet port (1). When the plunger (4) closes the valve, by-pass piston (55) opens bore (6) so that the medium flows from inlet (11) to by-pass (9). The unit can be included in the cooling system of an engine, to allow it to quickly reach the correct operating temp by restricting water circulation.
