The valve actuation system of an air cooled engine compensates thermal expansion in order to maintain valve play at minimum value. The rocker arms (4) of the valves (11) are arranged within a split rocker arm box with top (20) and base (17). The rocker arm is held on a ball (6) by a nut (5) on a rod (7) which is held in the plate (10) in the cylinder head (2). The stem of this rod is guided by the upper part of the cylinder head. Expansions are reduced by the air flow in the cylinder head and a hollow push rod transfers oil to the cylinder head for cooling. Reduction of valve play reduces noice considerably in air cooled high speed diesel engines.
