HBr Prodn. comprises converting NH4Br with Br in the presence of a catalyst, such as elemental C, at 250-800 degrees C, pref. 300-600 degrees C. Process avoids use of elemental hydrogen and does not produce salts which cause pollution problems. The reaction is pref. carried out at normal, below or above atm. pressure. The ammonium bromide can be in gaseous form or the Br is in gaseous form, the two being reacted in a solid, liquid or fluidised bed in the presence of the catalyst. As catalyst is used charcoal, or activated charcoal, in particulate form. The gas mixt. may contain in addn. other gases such as N2, Ar or HBr.
