A temperature wave is produced in the flowing liquid by a suitable transmitter (1) and monitored elsewhere by a suitable receiver (3) and the amplitude and phase shift interpreted according to a series of equations. The transmission velocities of such waves are frequency dependent, as are the wavelengths, and suitable tables are given in addition to the model equations. Transmitters and receivers can be combined in arrays of various kinds, with two transmitters (2, 5) and one receiver (4) or two receivers (13, 14) and one transmitter according to circumstances.
