Fabricated exhaust duct for vehicle engines with emission control - reduces thermal expansion stresses without increasing size in multi cylinder engines

Individual exhaust duct of each cylinder, leads into the combustion-type emission control equipment. The exhaust pipe itself (10) is attached to the cylinder head and is bell-mouthed at its outer end (11). A coinciding depression (12) in the combustion chamber (7) of the emission control equipment deflects the gases. A sleeve (19) is welded to the flange (4) and is attached coaxially at its outer end to an outer sleeve (17). This is attached at its other end (18) to the housing of the emission control equipment. All three tubes are spaced from each other, so that there is an extended effective bending length, thus producing low stresses with relative movement due to thermal expansion.
