A combined yarn clearer and tension device has a relatively fixed and a relatively mobile assembly, arranged in opposition to each other so as to form a narrow gangway through which the yarn runs; the fixed assembly on one side, yielding under the impact of thick places in the yarn, whilst that on the other side, can be displaced relatively to the fixed assembly by an arrangement responding to the tension on the yarn and alter the width of the gangway in inverse ratio. Applicable to reeling machines as well as to winding machines with either stationary or moving winding units.
