Conversion of hydrocarbon and hydrogen to methane-contg. gas - over catalyst contg nickel oxide on inert highly calcined metal oxide support free from acid functions
is prepd. by reacting C oxide and H2-contg. gas mixtures with heating, in the presence of a catalyst which consists of an inert metal oxide-based support, free from acid functions, on which 30 (3-30) esp. 5-15 wt.% NiO is deposited and which was calcined at 1000 (pref. 1300) degrees C. CO content in charge gas can be 3-50 vol.%; CO2 content is not important, quantity of steam added to charge gas can be kept very low. C deposition on catalyst can be prevented with addn. of 0.1 (0.07) vol. steam/vol. dry charge gas if charge gas contains H2 in = stoichiometric ratio to C available. If H2 quantity is sub-stoichiometric, steam quantity added is 0.3 vol/vol. dry charge gas. Low steam-quantity added allows better use of catalyst, with high conversions.
