alpha-(4-Alkanoyl-phenyl)propionic acids and esters in which the alkanoyl group is pref. lower alkanoyl, are prepd. by esterifying alpha-4-alkylphenyl)propionic acids, followed by oxidation of the alkyl group RCH2- to alkanoyl RCo with chromic acid in acetic acid solution followed by hydrolysis the ester if required. Excess chromic acid is pref. used, particularly twice the theoretical quantity, at 50-55 degrees C in acetic acid contg. 3-5% water.
