Composite Ni powder is prepd. by (I) evenly coating a particulate inert or electrically conducting core material with a Ni salt, (2) heating coated material to convert Ni salt to NiO, (3) heating NiO-coated core material in a reducing atmos. to convert NiO to Ni metal with formation of a powdery or particulate composite material. The Ni powder is used for sintered plates for alkali batteries. Costs are reduced by replacing carbonyl Ni powder, at least in part, without impairing porosity, conductivity and strength of plates.
