A permeameter is used to measure volume of water injected or released by ground under investigation. Pressure or vacuum conditions can be applied for the test duration. This method permits measurements of coefficients of consolidation and permeability without the errors presented by existing methods. A piston (2b) in a chamber (a) is controlled by a shaft (2c) driven by an electric motor order to inject or extract water (1) through a permeameter connected to the pipe, (7). Water pressure is maintained constant at a particular value by mercury (9) in contact with oil (13) in the arms of a U-tube (8). This is connected to the permeameter through a tube (12) connected to an oil to water exchanger, (11).
