The valve body consists of two cylindrical shells (130a, 130b) bolted together by means of the flanges (146) which are clamped against an intermediate flange (147). Recesses (163) in the flanges (146) house the L shaped section sealing rings (151) of elastomeric material which have a shallow V shape at the base (165) of the L section. The vertex of the V has, in the free state of the ring (151), a diameter slightly less than that of the valve piston (141) so that when the valve is closed the vertices are pressed against the periphery of the piston. This pressure is augmented by the fluid pressure which acts on the outer diameter of the base (165) of the L section.
