The culture is obtained by isolation and cultivation of an organism existing in a mixture of garden mould, sludge from an oxidation channel fed with waste water containing phenol and nitrate, earth from the environment of a phenol plant, farmyard manure and loen. Deficiences of nitrate ion in the waste water are made up with aqueous HNO 3 .
