The new azo dyes conform in the acid form to the formula: A-N=N-Np-NX-X-PO(OH)2 (I where A, Np and X are each as defined in Claim 1. The azo dyes of the formula I are prepared by coupling the diazonium salt of an amine of the formula A-NH2 with a naphthalene compound of the formula H-Np-NH-X-PO(OH)2 When the diazonium salt used contains a hydroxyl or carboxyl group or the methyl ether or methyl ester of such group ortho to the diazonium group, the dye obtained is also metallised to prepare a copper, nickel, cobalt or chromium complex. The new dyes of the formula I are suitable in particular for dyeing or printing cellulose textiles.
