New phosphorous esters of piperidinols of formula I and acid addn. salts. In (I) X is H, oxyl, 1-12C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, 3-4C alkynyl, 2-21C alkoxyalkyl, 7-8C aralkyl, 2,3- poxypropyl, 1-4C aliphatic acyl gp. -CH2COOR1, -CH2CH(R2)-OR3, -COOR4 or -CONHR4 where R1 is 1-12C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, phenyl, 7-8c aralkyl or cyclohexyl; R2 is H, Me or Ph; R3 is H, a 1-18C aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or alicyclic acyl gp. where the aromatic pt. is opt. substd. by Cl, 1-4C alkyl, 1-8C alkoxy and/or OH, or a gp. R4 is 1-22C alkyl, cyclohexyl, Ph or benzyl; Y is:- Y' is chosen from formulae II to IV.; R5 to R8 are each H 1-8C alkyl or 1-5 hydroxyalkyl, R9 and R10 are each H, 1-8C alkyl, 1-5C hydroxyalkyl or 1-4C acyl or together form a cyclohexane, 3-cyclohexene or bicyclo 2.2.1 heptene-5 ring; R11 and R12 are each H, 1-9C alkyl, 5-8C cycloalkyl or 7-9C aralkyl. Used as stabilisers of organic matter against light-induced thermo-oxidn, esp. in polymers e.g. high and low density polyetheylenes, polypropylene, polyurethanes, PVC, polystyrene and their copolymers. Prod. are stable to hydrolysis and low discolouration in use. A specif cps. include 5,5-dimethyl-2-(1,2,2,6,6,-pentamethyl-4-oxypiperidinyl)-1,3,2-di- oxa-phosphan and 5,5-dimethyl-2-(1-acetyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxy-piperidinyl)1,- 3,2-dioxa phosphan.
