1526703 Regulating roller and ring extruder drive SOC D'APPROVISIONNEMENTS DES INDUSTRIES ROUTIERES ET PETROLIERES 16 Feb 1977 [20 Feb 1976] 06502/77 Heading B5A A roller and ring extrusion press, for compressing and extruding animal feedstuff, is driven from a motor 8, via a clutch 16, and a torque converter 17 whose output speed is maintained above that yielding a predetermined ratio of torque transmission from the motor 8, e.g. at not below 0À72 efficiency, by a tachometer 20 which measures the output speed of the torque converter 17 and transmits a signal to a means regulating the feed of feedstuff to the press and acting, when the output speed falls below a predetermined value, to decrease the rate of feed to the press and thereby increase the output speed above the predetermined value. The rate of feed may be regulated by a screw whose speed of rotation is varied to effect the regulation or, as described, by a pivoted flap 4 which acts by varying the degree of obturation of a feed chute 3 to the press, and which is driven by a hydraulic actuator 21 which is controlled by a servo-valve 22, actuated from the tachometer 20 by an amplifier in which is set the predetermined value of the output speed, and which is also connected to effect disconnection of the clutch 16 if the output speed drops substantially below the predetermined value, i.e. due to jamming of the extrusion die by a foreign body. The amplifier may also be used to control the addition of steam to the foodstuff. The press comprises an annular die 1 being radially directed channels 2 through which the extrusion is effected by co-operation of the die with rollers 6 which are freely rotatable about axes 6 carried by a shaft 10. The output from the converter acts either to rotate rollers 6 around the die interior, with the die being fixed against rotation or, as shown, acts to rotate the die 13, via gears 15, 14 with a shaft 10, on which the rollers 6 are carried, being fixed against rotation at a shear pin connection 11 to the press casing.
