The novel prepn. comprises the polycondensation of tere -phthaloyl chloride, p-phenylene diamine and opt. other reactants producing copolymers in an anhydrous reaction medium composed of 30-98% hexamethylphosphortriamide and 70-2% of an gamma-lactone. The terephthaloyl chloride may be used in soln. in the gamma-lactone, thus obviating storage problems. The polycondensated obtd. is very homogeneous as reaction conditions can be controlled and the process may be continuous or discontinuous. The polymer may be pptd. from its reaction medium, washed and dried, and by dissolution in H2SO4, form spinning solns. yielding high performance filaments.
