The propulsion mechanism for a vessel has the propeller shaft (3) driven via a bevel seal wheel (5) whose shaft (6) extends at an angle relative the shaft (3) and a seal wheel (4) whose shaft (15) is coaxial with the propeller shaft and is carried in a bush (16, 17). The bush (16, 17) is held in a housing (7) enclosing the gearwheels. The propellor shaft is connected with the shaft (15) by an arrangement (19) which permits the propeller with its shaft to be axially withdrawn from the housing whilst leaving all other elements of the transmission in situ in the housing. The arrangement (19) may consist of a splined connection.
